I was on my way to my work on a job in San Diego. I got gas and checked my oil in Temecula. I had always known that my hood's emergency catch latch didn't work, but I never worried about it. Well, I got back on the freeway (I-15 southbound) and began accelerating. I got up to about 60 mph when I noticed my hood begin to flutter in the breeze. I had just enough time to think, "Great, my hood is gonna open" and BAM, it flew open in my face. I managed to pull safely over to the side and jumped on it to get it to close (notice the footprints in the pictures).
That dent is from the top of the windshield where the hood wrapped onto the roof.
Here's the view from another angle. Notice the windshield.
And that's where the hood made contact with my roof.
At least I have an excuse for a new paint job.
Close up of the roof damage.
I tried to get some pictures of my windshield, it was smashed. I could barely see out of it. Unfortunately, the cracks didn't really show up in any of the pictures I took.
I had a mobile windshield service replace my windshield that same day; it was too damaged for me to drive home with. The following day I found a hood in near-perfect condition at a local junk yard and picked it up for $100. The only problem was that it was maroon. Regardless, I put it on right there at the yard and gave them my old one.
Then came the expensive part, the new paint job.
And here we are, new hood, new paint job, and fellow SCPOCers in the background.
